WHY NOT
A few notes since everyone else is:
- I went in with an open mind, but the only thing I found enjoyable was the Matt LeBlanc Ariel Nomad piece.
- I honestly think Chris Harris could host, but not sure about his interviewer skills with big celebs. He has some good/entertaining interviews with engineers, so I would believe.
- Rallycross was a good idea poorly executed.
- Chris Evans was doing an impression of what Top Gear used to be. I don’t want to put him down for trying, but its just not working for me.
- I probably won’t watch another episode.
- What is Extra Gear, and how do I watch it? Do I want to watch it?

I really wanted to see was Harris, too. I
always
like watching Chris Harris drive while speaking his mind. Big dissapointment.
Chris Evans was kind of ridiculous, and Matt LeBlanc looked like he could surprisingly hold the show’s pace better than anyone.

Why isn’t Harris on Top Gear? Because they suck!
Le Blanc was very good for the material he had. Near the end of the real top gear we knew it was scripted, but damn it if they were good at making us forget that. There was no hiding that this show was scripted for every line. Terrible job.
As for Evans, someone needs to put a leash on that guy. Holy shit he needs to stop moving. And he’s so loud!
Also, the studio audience looked thoroughly bored. And the whole studio bits made it look like top gear us.

The main show was dreadful, and switched off after 20 minutes.
However I did think extra gear was a lot better with Chris Harris and Rory Reid, but they need time to settle in.
you can tell they know a lot more about cars than Chris and Matt. “You can watch it on Iplayer.”

Watched the first episode. I give the current hosting format two seasons before it’s changed.
- Chris Evans is unbearable and his punch lines lack that precious bit of irony that Clarksson always could broadcast. He should go and make room for Harris (who also seems like a great “bloke” to do adventures with, judging from stories and podcast appearances) and a third host (Jenson Button!).
- Matt LeBlanc is surprisingly good. Sure, the studio hosting was a bit... mumbly, but that’s easier to forgive and probably easier to grow into. The Nomad bit was nice - I think LeBlanc could even carry a “regular” review like the late 918 and LaFerrari pieces.
- The double-celebrity thing works in theory, but the rally cross thing is not entertaining to watch. I loved the contrast of an econobox driven by an amateur (and visibly done so) on the same track the Stig in an amazing hypercar. Bring that back, please.
All in all, not as bad as I’d expect. If they either chase Evans or somehow contain him in the show, plus bring another charming host, this could be something. I’ll watch the season and the next one to see how that goes.

Having watched both shows, I was just blown by how well Rory and Chris put together Extra Gear. It was miles better than the main show. Maybe I’ll blame it on the internet, for forcing me to adopt the short compact version of the 20 minute show. After all, you are competing against click bait, trailers, instagram videos, vines, snapchat and whatever other web platform you can name.
Yes Chris Evan was a total failure. But I don’t blame him, I blame his career. He’s used to radio, where usually it’s just you and your guest talking back and forth. He’s not used to getting seen while he does his chit chat or interacting with a live audience (other than a call). So he has to iron out a lot of the flow to get it to work and make it seem more natural.
Matt was fine and comfortable, after all he was on camera for god knows how many Friends seasons and like 1Joey ones.
But surprisingly, Rory and Chris kept the aura of the old Top Gear. Rory’s Rally track piece was nice to watch for the new viewers (which the main show might end up losing; not his fault). The Rally cross track; someone at Jalop gave Ferrari unconfirmed flack for promoting a sold out car and ruining a free bias press but decided to not mention Mini in the rally cross track? To me, Mini clearly bought the segment, hence the car. Just look how hard they have been going at Dakar trying to eliminate that chick car misconception.
Chris’ Atom review was like having Clarkson screaming power, pooouuuwwwer, and pooouuuwwweerrrr again and again.
